Snoring Treatment
Loud frequent snoring can often result in a forceful nudge from a frustrated partner trying to sleep. This is only one side effect of snoring and the least concerning.
As you begin to drift into a deep sleep, your neck muscles, which are responsible for holding your airway clear, relax. Snoring results from the upper airway narrowing and the soft tissues at the back of your throat vibrating as you breathe. The soft tissues include your tongue, the uvula (the suspended tissue at the back of your throat) and your soft palate. Excess fat around the throat can also contribute to snoring as it places extra weight on your neck muscles. Generally, the more narrow your airway the louder the snoring. Snoring has been recorded as loud as a vacuum cleaner at a three-metre distance.
Apart from being disruptive, snoring can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue and tension between couples who may resort to sleeping in separate rooms. In addition, snoring can indicate the concerning condition of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea occurs when the airway is cut off completely, this causes a lack of oxygen and increase in carbon dioxide in your blood. Your brain recognises this non-breathing and signals the muscles causing a reflex action, you gasp, wake up, resume breathing and go back to sleep almost immediately and often with no recollection of ever waking.
In severe cases, this can occur several hundred times a night with non-breathing episodes lasting from several seconds up to one minute. Whilst associated, snoring does not automatically mean you have sleep apnoea.
